Pulkka Lounge Chairs and Ottomans by Ilmari Lappalainen for Asko
A matching pair of Pulkka lounge chairs with ottomans, designed by Ilmari Lappalainen for Asko in Finland in 1968. Considered an icon of Finnish modern design, the Pulkka is known for its innovative use of materials, relaxed comfort, and distinctive silhouette.
Each chair features a lightweight aluminum frame paired with black leather upholstery, creating a striking contrast between industrial and natural materials. The design includes adjustable seating positions, allowing the chairs to recline into a more relaxed lounging posture. Loose neck cushions add additional comfort, while zippered upholstery allows for easy removal and maintenance.
The combination of curved aluminum supports and suspended leather seating gives the chairs a light, almost floating appearance while maintaining excellent comfort. Matching ottomans complete the set, making them ideal for extended lounging.
Each chair measures approximately 29.9 inches in width, with an armrest height of approximately 16.7 inches. The ottomans measure approximately 21.7 x 19.7 inches and stand approximately 13.8 inches high.
Condition is vintage with visible wear consistent with age and use. The leather upholstery shows signs of use, including marks, scuffs, and wear throughout. The neck cushion straps have stretched over time. Despite these signs of age, the chairs retain their strong visual character and remain highly desirable examples of Finnish modern design. Asko Export labels are present.
What we like most about the Pulkka is the combination of comfort and innovation. The use of aluminum was ahead of its time, and the adjustable design makes these chairs just as enjoyable to use today as when they were first introduced.
As with all vintage pieces, signs of use are part of the story. Colors can look slightly different depending on the light. If you'd like more details, just let me know.
