Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Barcelona Lounge Chairs for Knoll, Pair
A pair of Barcelona Lounge Chairs designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for Knoll.
Originally created for the German Pavilion at the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona, the Barcelona Chair has become one of the most iconic furniture designs of the twentieth century. Its elegant combination of architectural precision and luxurious materials perfectly reflects Mies van der Rohe's famous philosophy that "less is more."
Each chair features a polished chromed steel frame with the graceful X-shaped profile that has defined the design for nearly a century. The frames support generously padded cushions upholstered in button-tufted leather, creating a striking contrast between the clean lines of the steel structure and the softness of the upholstery.
The Barcelona Chair was conceived as a modern ceremonial seat and remains one of the most recognizable examples of modernist furniture design. Its sculptural form allows it to function equally well as a statement piece in contemporary interiors, executive offices, or design-focused living spaces.
These examples are authentic Knoll productions and retain the quality craftsmanship for which the manufacturer is known. The hand-finished steel frames and meticulously detailed leather upholstery showcase the enduring appeal of the design.
Each chair measures approximately 29.5 inches wide, 30.3 inches deep, and 30.3 inches high, with a seat height of approximately 16.9 inches.
Condition is very good. The chairs show only minimal signs of use consistent with age and present beautifully overall.
What we like most about the Barcelona Chair is its timeless balance of elegance and simplicity. Nearly a century after its introduction, it remains one of the defining pieces of modern furniture design.
As with all vintage and collectible pieces, signs of use are part of the story. Colors can look slightly different depending on the light. If you'd like more photos or details, just let me know.
