Josef Frank Model 868 Armchairs, Pair, Svenskt Tenn, Pink “Vägen” Upholstery
A pair of Model 868 armchairs designed by Josef Frank in 1938 for Svenskt Tenn.
These chairs reflect Frank’s approach to modernism, where comfort and warmth were prioritized over strict geometry. The form is light and open, with gently curved armrests and straight legs that create a balanced and elegant silhouette.
The design takes inspiration from 18th-century armchairs, reinterpreted through Frank’s more relaxed and human-centered style. The result is a chair that feels refined but still inviting, with proportions that work well in both classic and contemporary interiors.
The frames are crafted in walnut, giving the chairs a warm and natural foundation. They are upholstered in a pink cotton-linen fabric with the “Vägen” pattern, adding a soft decorative character without overwhelming the form. The piping detail reinforces the structure of the upholstery and adds a clean finishing touch.
Width is approximately 25.2 inches, depth around 29.9 inches, and height approximately 35 inches. Seat height is about 16.9 inches, with a seat depth of approximately 18.5 inches.
Condition is very good vintage. The chairs show light wear consistent with age and use, but overall present well and remain structurally solid and comfortable.
What we like about them is the balance between the delicate frame and the patterned upholstery. They feel light in the room while still offering a strong visual identity.
As with all vintage pieces, signs of use are part of the story. Colors can look slightly different depending on the light. If you'd like more photos or details, just let me know.
