A rare set of six Model 695 dining chairs, designed by Josef Frank in 1935 for Firma Svenskt Tenn in Sweden and produced circa 2000. Originally conceived as a chair suitable for both dining and desk use, the Model 695 reflects Frank's belief that everyday furniture should provide exceptional comfort without sacrificing elegance. Its thoughtful proportions and refined detailing have made it one of Svenskt Tenn's enduring classics.
The set consists of four side chairs and two matching armchairs, creating a balanced and versatile dining arrangement. Each chair is crafted from solid mahogany, whose rich tone beautifully complements the vibrant red upholstery. The gently curved backrests, generously upholstered cushions, and carefully considered ergonomics make the chairs as comfortable as they are visually refined. Frank's meticulous approach to craftsmanship is evident throughout, with each chair comprising numerous individually crafted components assembled to create a design that feels both lightweight and remarkably sturdy.
The side chairs each measure approximately 19.3 inches wide, 21.7 inches deep, and 33.5 inches high, with a seat height of approximately 19.7 inches. The armchairs measure approximately 24 inches wide, 23.6 inches deep, and 33.1 inches high, with a seat height of approximately 18.9 inches and arm height of approximately 26.4 inches.
The chairs are in good vintage condition with light wear and minor staining consistent with age and use. The mahogany frames remain structurally sound, while the upholstery presents well overall with expected signs of careful ownership. Together, the set retains a cohesive and elegant appearance.
What we like most about the Model 695 is its remarkable balance of comfort and craftsmanship. Josef Frank designed these chairs to be lived with every day, and nearly ninety years later they remain as practical, inviting, and timeless as when they were first introduced.
As with all vintage pieces, signs of use are part of the story. Colors can look slightly different depending on the light. If you'd like more photos or details, just let me know.
