A Model 591 garden chair designed by Josef Frank for Svenskt Tenn in Sweden.

Designed during the 1930s, the Model 591 is one of Josef Frank's most recognizable metal furniture designs. Created during the height of the functionalist movement, the chair combines practical outdoor durability with the light and elegant character that defines Frank's work. Rather than using chromium plating, Frank chose a warm lacquered finish, giving the design a softer and more inviting appearance.

The chair is crafted from black lacquered iron and features an openwork mesh seat and back. This construction provides visual lightness while allowing air and light to pass through the design, a principle that Frank often embraced throughout his furniture. The simple geometric lines and balanced proportions give the chair a timeless quality that remains relevant today.

Originally conceived as garden furniture, the Model 591 works equally well indoors, where its sculptural metal frame adds a distinctive Scandinavian modern character.

Seat height is approximately 15.7 inches, overall height approximately 31.1 inches, width approximately 24 inches, depth approximately 25.6 inches, seat depth approximately 18.9 inches, and armrest height approximately 24.4 inches.

Condition is good vintage. The chair shows wear and minor losses to the black lacquer finish consistent with age and use. The frame remains structurally sound and presents well overall.

What we like about the Model 591 is its balance between function and elegance. The lightweight open construction and refined proportions make it a classic example of Josef Frank's approach to modern design.

As with all vintage pieces, signs of use are part of the story. Colors can look slightly different depending on the light. If you'd like more photos or details, just let me know.
