Josef Frank Model 1165 Armchairs for Svenskt Tenn, Pair

A pair of model 1165 armchairs designed by Josef Frank for Svenskt Tenn in Sweden in 1947.

This model was created shortly after Frank returned to Stockholm from New York and reflects many of the qualities that made his furniture so distinctive. The design combines elegant proportions with a light, open appearance, allowing the chairs to feel present in a room without dominating the space.

Each chair features a solid mahogany frame paired with a hand-woven rattan backrest. Frank often combined different materials in his furniture, and the contrast between the rich mahogany and natural rattan creates a warm and inviting character. The open back also reflects his belief that furniture should allow light and views to pass through a room rather than obstruct them.

The seats are generously upholstered for comfort, making the chairs suitable for dining, occasional seating, or use as accent chairs in a living room or study. The clean lines and balanced proportions allow them to work equally well in both traditional and modern interiors.

Condition is good vintage. The chairs show minor signs of use and occasional marks consistent with age. The mahogany frames and woven rattan backs present well overall.

What we like about them is the combination of materials and the lightness of the design. They have the warmth and craftsmanship associated with Josef Frank while maintaining an airy, understated presence.
