Hans J. Wegner Papa Bear Chair AP-19 for AP-Stolen, Denmark
The Papa Bear Chair, also known as the AP-19 or "Bamse" chair, is one of Hans J. Wegner's most celebrated designs and remains an icon of Danish furniture design.
Originally designed in 1951 and produced by AP-Stolen in Denmark, the Papa Bear Chair is known for its sculptural silhouette and exceptional comfort. Its distinctive winged back and curved armrests create an embracing form that has earned the chair its affectionate nickname. The design perfectly reflects Wegner's ability to combine craftsmanship, comfort, and timeless aesthetics.
This example features a solid wood frame constructed in oak and beech and has been upholstered at a later date in a light red fabric. The generous proportions, deep seat, and high back provide excellent support while maintaining the elegant organic lines that define the design.
Few chairs capture the warmth and character of Danish Modern furniture as successfully as the Papa Bear Chair. It is a piece that feels equally at home as a focal point in a living room, library, or reading corner.
Width is approximately 39 inches, depth approximately 35.4 inches, overall height approximately 41.3 inches, and seat height approximately 15.7 inches.
Condition is good vintage. The chair has later upholstery and shows minor stains and wear consistent with age and use. The frame remains solid, and the chair presents well overall.
What we like most about the Papa Bear Chair is the combination of comfort and presence. It is a chair that naturally draws attention in a room while remaining inviting enough for everyday use.
As with all vintage pieces, signs of use are part of the story. Colors can look slightly different depending on the light. If you'd like more photos or details, just let me know.
