A pair of Model 969 armchairs designed by Josef Frank for Svenskt Tenn in Sweden.

Designed in 1939, the Model 969 reflects Josef Frank's ability to combine traditional influences with his distinctive approach to modern furniture. Inspired by the elegant armchairs of the eighteenth century, the design features graceful proportions and refined detailing while maintaining the comfort and practicality for which Frank's furniture is known.

Each chair features a solid mahogany frame with a distinctive lyre-shaped rattan backrest. The combination of rich mahogany and woven rattan was a recurring theme in Frank's work, creating a sense of warmth while preserving the light and airy character he sought in his interiors. The open back allows light to pass through the design, helping the chairs maintain a visual lightness despite their generous proportions.

The seats, armrests, and loose back cushions are upholstered in a later textile. The tapered mahogany legs and softly curved armrests contribute to the chair's elegant silhouette, while the generous seat provides excellent comfort for everyday use.

Width is approximately 25.6 inches, depth approximately 29.5 inches, overall height approximately 33.1 inches, seat height approximately 16.5 inches, seat depth approximately 19.3 inches, and armrest height approximately 26 inches.

Condition is good vintage. The chairs show wear, marks, and minor stains consistent with age and use. The upholstery is later, and the mahogany frames display normal signs of age. Overall, the chairs present well and retain their original character.

What we like about the Model 969 is the balance between elegance and comfort. The lyre-shaped rattan back and refined mahogany frame give the chairs a distinctive presence while remaining light and inviting.

As with all vintage pieces, signs of use are part of the story. Colors can look slightly different depending on the light. If you'd like more photos or details, just let me know.
