Hans J. Wegner GE-240 “Cigar” Armchairs for Getama, Denmark, Pair

A pair of GE-240 armchairs, designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1955 for Getama in Gedsted, Denmark. Known as the “Cigar” chairs, this model is one of Wegner’s most recognizable and comfortable lounge designs, celebrated for its sculptural armrests and generous proportions.

The design features a solid oak frame combined with teak armrests, creating a warm contrast between structure and detail. The characteristic rounded armrests give the chair its nickname, while the softly angled back and deep seat provide excellent comfort. The chairs are fitted with Getama sprung cushions, later reupholstered in fabric, allowing the design to retain its original character while offering renewed usability.

Seat height is approximately 15.7 inches, height around 29.9 inches, width approximately 27 inches, and depth around 29.5 inches.

Condition is good vintage. The oak frames and teak armrests show light patina and minor surface marks consistent with age and use. The upholstery has been later replaced and presents well.

What works well here is the combination of craftsmanship and comfort. The sculpted armrests and solid joinery give the chair presence, while the proportions make it an easy and inviting lounge piece.
