A striking pair of Utrecht armchairs, designed by Gerrit Rietveld in 1935 and produced by Cassina in Italy. One of the defining icons of twentieth-century furniture design, the Utrecht chair reflects Rietveld's revolutionary approach to form, combining the geometric principles of the De Stijl movement with surprising comfort. Originally introduced for Metz & Co. in Amsterdam, it remains one of the few upholstered designs by Rietveld to enter continuous production.
Each chair is upholstered in luxurious light gray 100% wool, emphasizing the bold architectural silhouette and clean geometric lines that have made the Utrecht instantly recognizable. The design features a self-supporting structure where the angled seat and back merge seamlessly into the rear leg, while the broad armrests continue directly into the front supports. Visible zig-zag stitching highlights the construction and serves as one of the chair's most distinctive design details. Both chairs retain their original Cassina labels, confirming authentic production.
Each chair measures approximately 25.2 inches wide, 33.5 inches deep, and 27.6 inches high, with a seat height of approximately 14.6 inches.
The chairs are in very good vintage condition with minimal signs of use consistent with age and careful ownership. The wool upholstery is clean and beautifully preserved, while the overall structure remains solid and comfortable. Both chairs present exceptionally well and are ready for everyday use.
What we like most about the Utrecht is its ability to feel both artistic and functional. Nearly ninety years after its introduction, its bold geometry still looks remarkably modern while offering the comfort expected from a well-crafted lounge chair.
As with all vintage pieces, signs of use are part of the story. Colors can look slightly different depending on the light. If you'd like more photos or details, just let me know.
