An iconic “La Mamma” armchair, model UP5, with matching UP6 ottoman, designed by Gaetano Pesce in 1969 and produced by B&B Italia as part of the UP 2000 series. This is one of the most recognized and provocative designs in postmodern Italian furniture history, widely exhibited in major international museums.

The design is conceived as a sculptural representation of the female body, combining bold form with conceptual meaning. The accompanying spherical ottoman (UP6) is often interpreted as a symbolic element tied to the chair’s narrative, reinforcing Pesce’s intention to challenge social and cultural norms through design.

Both pieces are made from flexible cold-foamed polyurethane and fully upholstered in striped jersey textile. The base is finished in jute fabric, maintaining the raw material contrast that defines the UP series. The result is a piece that sits between furniture and art object, maintaining both visual impact and functional seating comfort.

Height is approximately 40.2 inches, width around 47.2 inches, and depth approximately 51.2 inches. Seat height is approximately 26.4 inches. Ottoman diameter is approximately 22.4 inches.

Condition is good used vintage. The set shows minor wear and light staining consistent with age and use. Overall it presents well and remains structurally sound.

What works well here is the strong sculptural presence combined with its conceptual narrative, making it both a seating piece and a statement object.

As with all vintage pieces, signs of use are part of the story. Colors can appear slightly different depending on lighting conditions. If you’d like more photos or details, just let me know.
