Gaetano Pesce UP5 “La Mamma” Armchair with UP6 Ottoman for B&B Italia, Italy

An iconic “La Mamma” armchair, model UP5, with matching UP6 ottoman, designed by Gaetano Pesce in 1969 and produced by B&B Italia as part of the UP 2000 series. This is one of the most recognized and provocative designs in postmodern Italian furniture history, widely exhibited in major international museums.

The design is conceived as a sculptural representation of the female body, combining bold form with conceptual meaning. The accompanying spherical ottoman (UP6) is often interpreted as a symbolic element tied to the chair’s narrative, reinforcing Pesce’s intention to challenge social and cultural norms through design.

Both pieces are made from flexible cold-foamed polyurethane and fully upholstered in striped jersey textile. The base is finished in jute fabric, maintaining the raw material contrast that defines the UP series.
